This species is immediately recognizable by its disproportionately long, bright orange bill with a distinct yellow tip, where the lower mandible is noticeably longer than the upper—a perfect adaptation for skimming. The birds possess clean white underparts, a striking black cap and nape, and deep brownish-grey to black upper wings and back. They are captured here in a synchronized flock, suggesting a social movement between feeding grounds.
