In The Wild is a Mandarin Chinese dictionary, contextual parser, selection translator, and vocabulary saver built for real webpages and authored YouTube subtitles. HOVER TO UNDERSTAND Point at Chinese text on most webpages to see the word or phrase In The Wild found, its pinyin, contextual part of speech, and a learner-friendly definition. Core lookup works without an account. CHOOSE THE MEANING YOU ACTUALLY SAW When multiple readings are available, use the Up and Down arrow keys to choose the right meaning. Press M—or click the highlighted reading—to save that exact choice. There is no separate Save button. TRANSLATE A SELECTION Highlight Mandarin and press T for an English translation. Only the text you explicitly selected is sent through the In The Wild translation service to Google Translate. Translation does not require an account, and the extension does not store the selected text. SAVE WORDS WITH THEIR CONTEXT Connect a free In The Wild account when you want to save. Each saved word can retain its source sentence, page title, source URL, chosen meaning, and parser identity. Saved vocabulary enters your Backpack and In The Wild Review, with pronunciation audio requested automatically. LEARN FROM YOUTUBE On supported desktop YouTube videos with one authored Mandarin caption track, activate In The Wild subtitles to hover and save vocabulary directly from the current cue. Captions remain memory-only for the current video; the full transcript is not uploaded to In The Wild. OPTIONAL ANKI SUPPORT Anki is optional. After you explicitly grant localhost access, In The Wild can send the same contextual vocabulary to Anki Desktop through AnkiConnect. Your In The Wild Backpack remains the canonical saved copy. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Hovered page text is parsed locally with signed parser assets and integrity-checked dictionary shards. It is not sent to analytics. Data leaves the extension only when you connect an account, request a selected-text translation, or explicitly save vocabulary. Pending authenticated saves are stored in an owner-bound local queue and retry after a network or browser interruption.
