Both birds display the species' characteristic striking blue coloration on the head, wings, and long tail, contrasting sharply with the pale grey-white throat and the light, dusty-grey breast. A faint but distinct blue 'collar' separates the blue cap from the throat. Their bills are dark, strong, and straight, well-suited for a varied diet of nuts, seeds, insects, and small vertebrates. Their postures are alert and focused on the offered food, highlighting their famously inquisitive and adaptable nature, allowing them to thrive in the scrublands, woodlands, and suburban areas of the Pacific coast.
