Description
Estimate the water and carbon footprint of your AI queries in real time. Track your Carbon & Water usage from across top AI chatting tools🌱 Problem we are trying to solve: AI Chat feels effortless, but every prompt sent to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other models uses energy and water, estimates suggest that it uses 10 to 20 times more than an average google search. GreenQuery makes this hidden cost visible and helps you reduce it. How does it work? We estimate the carbon foot print and water consumption(for data centre cooling) by: First-> Estimate the amount of input and output tokens used for the promt used, different models have different token calculation method. For example for OpenAI's model we use their tool called "Tokenizer" Second-> We find the origin location of the prompt and estimate the country's grid intensity for both water and carbon usage, these constants are all various academic research papers. Third -> Other constant that get fed into the estimation methods are 1. Token usage time of the day 2.Type of model (GPT 5, Gemini 3...etc) Fourth -> We then output the CO2 and Water usage per query on the extension. Key features: 🔑 Real‑time impact: Instantly calculates CO₂ emissions (grams) and water use (litres) for each AI query. It captures actual token counts from the browser to improve accuracy and uses model‑specific energy factors and regional electricity/water intensity to deliver precise estimates. 🔑 Mini tracker: A small overlay appears on ChatGPT. It displays current CO₂ and water usage for for your current session 🔑 Trends & analytics: View weekly and monthly graphs of your carbon and water footprint. See percentage change versus the previous period and export your history to CSV. 🔑History & filtering: Browse up to a year of usage data, filter by date or site, and sort by total water or CO₂. 🔑Prompt helper: Enter your prompt to improve prompting efficiency which in turns reduces Co2 & water usage of prompt 🔑 Customization: Override your region code, energy per token or PUE if you have better data. GreenQuery supports GPT 🔑 Offset options: Built‑in links to reputable carbon offset partners let you neutralize your footprint with a click. 🔑 Privacy‑friendly: All data is stored locally; no account or cloud sync required. You can delete your history at any time. If you care about the environmental impact of AI, AI energy consumption, ChatGPT carbon footprint or simply want to understand your AI climate impact, GreenQuery is your companion. Install it today to make your digital life more sustainable and discover how small changes add up. FAQ ❓What is GreenQuery? GreenQuery is a Chrome extension that estimates the carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and water usage linked to your ChatGPT queries. It helps you understand the real environmental cost of AI conversations by translating invisible energy use into clear numbers. ❓How does GreenQuery calculate my impact? Each AI prompt consumes electricity (for computation) and water (for cooling data centers). GreenQuery estimates your footprint using token counts from your ChatGPT session, model-specific energy factors, and regional electricity and water data. It applies published metrics from research by MIT and other academic sources to produce realistic estimates. ❓Why does AI use so much energy and water? Large language models like GPT use powerful servers that require constant cooling. According to MIT research, a single ChatGPT query uses roughly five times more electricity than a typical Google search. Data centers also use significant amounts of water to manage heat, especially in regions relying on water-based cooling systems. ❓Does GreenQuery store or share my data? No. All data stays on your computer. GreenQuery doesn’t collect, upload, or sell your information. You can delete your usage history at any time — everything runs locally in your browser. ❓Which AI models does it currently support? At the moment, GreenQuery works only on ChatGPT (GPT models). Support for Claude, Gemini, and other models will roll out in future updates. ❓What does the mini tracker do? The mini tracker is a small overlay that appears on your ChatGPT window. It shows the real-time CO₂ and water usage for your ongoing session, so you can see your impact as you chat. ❓Can I change the region or energy assumptions? Yes. If you know your data center’s region or have more accurate electricity and cooling values, you can override the defaults. GreenQuery lets you adjust regional energy intensity, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), and water coefficients to refine your footprint estimate. ❓How accurate are these numbers? They’re estimates not exact measurements but they’re grounded in peer-reviewed data and real token usage. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s transparency. GreenQuery helps you make informed, eco-aware decisions rather than providing audit-grade calculations. ❓Can I offset my emissions? Yes. GreenQuery includes links to reputable carbon offset partners. You can choose to neutralize your footprint directly from the dashboard. ❓Will GreenQuery slow down ChatGPT? No noticeable slowdown. The extension runs lightweight calculations locally and doesn’t interfere with ChatGPT’s performance. ❓Is GreenQuery free to use? Yes. It’s completely free, with no sign-ups or subscriptions required. ❓Does it work with Adblockers? Depends on the type of adblocker you have, it might block the tracker from functioning properly 💡What’s coming next? Upcoming updates will expand model coverage (Claude, Gemini, Mistral, etc.), add browser-wide tracking, and offer deeper comparisons across models and regions.
