Highlight any word, phrase, or sentence and get a clear, context-aware explanation in plain English — plus one-click pronunciation. HOW IT WORKS 1. Select text on any webpage 2. Click Explain in the floating toolbar (or use the right-click menu / keyboard shortcut) 3. Read the plain-English meaning in the panel; click Speak to hear it aloud FEATURES • Context-aware explanations — uses the surrounding paragraph so word and phrase meanings match what you're reading • Works on words, phrases, and sentences • Floating toolbar appears after you select text • Right-click menu: Explain selection / Pronounce selection • Keyboard shortcuts: Alt+Shift+E (explain), Alt+Shift+S (speak) • Draggable explanation panel with copy and speak buttons • Bring your own API key — works with OpenAI and other OpenAI-compatible endpoints • Text-to-speech uses your browser's built-in voices (no extra API cost for speech) SETUP After installing, click the PlainRead icon → Open settings → add your API key and save. Your key stays in Chrome storage on your device. PRIVACY PlainRead does not run a developer-operated backend. Selected text is sent to your configured AI provider only when you request an explanation. See our privacy policy for details. Note: AI explanations require your own API key and may incur charges from your API provider.
