Readable dark mode for websites. Includes a site toggle, always-on mode, and adjustable colors. Settings stay local. Make the web more comfortable to read with Afterdark. Afterdark brings a dark appearance to websites, including sites without their own dark mode. It adapts backgrounds, text, links, borders, and controls while keeping the page's original fonts and layout. It uses a dynamic color engine instead of inverting the entire screen, helping photographs and videos retain their natural colors. YOUR WEBSITE, YOUR CHOICE Turn dark mode on for a website and Afterdark remembers that hostname. Your choice stays saved as you navigate, reload pages, and restart Chrome. ALWAYS ON Enable Always on to keep supported websites dark, including open tabs and websites you visit next. Turn it off to return to your saved individual website choices. MAKE IT COMFORTABLE Choose Charcoal, Midnight, or Warm. Adjust brightness, contrast, and warmth to suit your preference. Appearance changes apply to enabled websites, and Reset appearance restores the default palette and sliders. KEEPS UP WITH THE PAGE Afterdark adapts supported content as it loads, including many embedded frames and web components. Use Alt+Shift+D to toggle the current website when Always on is off. The shortcut can be customized in Chrome's extension shortcut settings. START WHEN YOU ARE READY Afterdark starts off. Open a website, click the Afterdark icon, and turn on This website or Always on. No account or subscription is required. HOW YOUR DATA IS USED Afterdark accesses webpage content, styles, and the current website address to create a dark appearance and apply your choices. Settings and selected hostnames are stored locally on your device. When necessary, the extension requests CSS and image resources from their source servers to analyze colors; those servers receive normal network request information. The extension's background resource helper omits cookies, authorization credentials, and referrers. Afterdark has no analytics, advertising, or developer-operated data collection server, and does not send your page content or saved settings to its developer. COMPATIBILITY Afterdark works on supported HTTP and HTTPS websites. Chrome blocks extensions on its internal pages, New Tab, the Chrome Web Store, and other extensions' pages. The browser toolbar and built-in PDF viewer are not themed. Text inside images, videos, or canvas, some closed web components, and restricted resources may not adapt. A brief light flash can occur while a page starts loading. Some websites may need individual compatibility fixes. Powered by the MIT-licensed Dark Reader engine.
