It is showcasing the elaborate fanned tail and puffed-up body feathers that are integral to its courtship and dominance rituals. The plumage, a rich, iridescent mix of copper, bronze, and dark metallic green, catches the light beautifully, despite the bird’s generally heavy build. My three decades of avian research, particularly focusing on gallinaceous species, have highlighted the unique caruncles and snood—the fleshy, reddish-blue skin on the head and neck—which change color with the birds mood and excitement. We observe that this robust birds strong legs are adapted for rapid ground movement and scratching for food, while the massive tail acts as a brilliant backdrop designed to attract mates and intimidate rivals in the underbrush of North American forests.
