Select text on any page, right-click, and hear it read aloud. Choose the voice and fine-tune speed, pitch and volume. Highlight a paragraph, right-click, and the page reads itself to you. No dialog to fill in, no window to keep open: select the text, choose "Read aloud with WiserWork", and it starts. Close the popup and it carries on to the end of your selection. WHAT IT DOES • Reads exactly what you selected — nothing more • Every voice your browser can reach, in one list • Chrome's natural online voices are grouped separately, so the best-sounding ones are easy to find • Speed from half to two-and-a-half times, plus pitch and volume • "Test this voice" button so you can hear a setting before you keep it • Long selections are read sentence by sentence, so it starts talking immediately • Pause, resume and stop from the toolbar, or "Stop reading" in the right-click menu • Keyboard shortcut: Alt+Shift+R ABOUT THE VOICES Voices come from your browser and your operating system, and this extension gives you all of them in one place. Chrome's online voices are neural and sound closest to a real person; the ones installed on your computer are more robotic but work with no connection at all. Installing an extra language or speech pack in your system settings adds more voices to the list. PRIVACY The extension has no server, no account and no analytics, and it collects nothing. The browser hands it only the text you selected — it cannot read the rest of the page and injects no scripts. If you choose one of Chrome's online voices, Chrome sends that text to Google's speech service to generate the audio, exactly as it does for any website using those voices; pick a voice from the offline group and nothing leaves your computer. On first install it opens its guide page on wiserwork.org once, so you know how to use it; that page is an ordinary web page and the site privacy policy covers it. PERMISSIONS, EXPLAINED • contextMenus — adds the "Read aloud" entry to the right-click menu • tts — speaks the text and lists the available voices • storage — remembers your voice, speed, pitch and volume on your own device No access to any website is requested. GOOD TO KNOW Chrome does not allow extensions on its own pages, so chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store cannot be read. A few places replace the browser's right-click menu with their own, including the built-in PDF viewer, so the item does not appear there. Free, with no trial and no paid tier. One thing to know: Chrome hands an extension only the first part of a selection — around a thousand characters, which is several paragraphs. A long article is read a section at a time, and the popup tells you when a selection was cut short.
