Distinguished by their generally bluish-grey plumage, often featuring iridescent neck feathers and two distinct black bars across each wing, they exhibit remarkable aerial coordination. The sight of a tight-knit flock maneuvering simultaneously is a stunning display of collective intelligence and rapid-fire communication, a vital defense mechanism against airborne predators. My fieldwork has frequently documented their incredible resourcefulness, having successfully colonized virtually every major city and human settlement globally, far beyond their original cliff-face habitats. Their powerful, pointed wings and short legs are well-adapted for both quick escape and rapid landing on ledges and structures. Observing this species over three decades highlights their unparalleled flexibility in diet and nesting habits, cementing their status as one of the most widespread and ecologically resilient birds I have encountered.
