Description
Restores Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario on Google maps to their actual legal names outside the US. Google renamed two places. This puts them back. Maps Corrector restores "Gulf of Mexico" and "Lake Ontario" on Google Maps — both in the page text and on the map itself — and marks each one with a red maple leaf. WHAT IT CHANGES Gulf of America -> Gulf of Mexico Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) -> Gulf of Mexico Lake America -> Lake Ontario Lake Ontario (Lake America) -> Lake Ontario HOW IT WORKS Google Maps renders text two different ways, so the extension works two different ways. Page text — search results, place titles, directions, the browser tab title — is real page text, and it gets rewritten as it appears. Matches are word-bounded, so "Bank of America" is left alone. Labels drawn on the map are not text at all. They are pixels in a WebGL canvas, and nothing running in the page can read or edit them. So each corrected name is pinned to the geographic centre of its feature and projected onto the map with Web Mercator, using the camera position Google keeps in the URL. The label is drawn at that spot. PRIVACY No accounts, no analytics, no network requests, no storage. It runs only on Google Maps and sends nothing anywhere.
