This bird is immediately recognizable by its distinctively stocky build and incredibly rich color pattern. The head features a prominent, velvety black cap and face, which contrasts intensely with the brilliant, rosy-pink to salmon-orange plumage covering its chest and underparts. Its beak is characteristically short, thick, and perfectly conical—a powerful tool specialized for crushing seeds and buds, often to the dismay of gardeners. The grey mantle and the white patch on the rump (not fully visible) complete its bold attire.
